Romford 1 - 4 MK Lightning Win

Lightning travelled to Romford on sunday looking for 2 points after a disappointing reversal against Bracknell the previous evening. With player coach Nick Poole and defenceman Chris McEwen both out of the squad for the weekend, the road trip to Rom Valley Way was made all the more harder, especially with Raiders unbeaten in their last 2 at home.

A nervy start from the home side saw Lightning on the offence from the puck drop, and although they had the pressure, it took until 12.42 for them to take the lead. Some good work on the boards from the 3rd line of Grant Mcpherson and Michael Wales saw the puck fed to Matt Towalski behind the net, and after circling round behind the net he slotted home under Raiders netminder Tom Chamberlain to open the scoring. With referee Roman Szucks allowing a free flowing game, the period ended penalty free, with Romford having faced 13 shots while Hollyhead faced just 5.

Raiders came out for the second period with a lot more purpose, and started to threaten more around the MKL net. A stunning glove save from Hollyhead kept Lightning in front, and an almighty scramble soon after ended with Hollyhead lying on top of the puck in the crease to keep the score the same. At 31.47 penalties were exchanged with Filip of Romford and James Pease both receiving 2 mins for cross checking, but the 4 on 4 play led to nothing for either team. At 34.09 the energetic Towalski broke down the left and fired a cross shot which was tipped into the roof of the net by Wales to double Lightning's advantage. That advantage was short lived tho as barely 30 seconds later Cotton latched onto a good passing move to make the score 2-1 at 34.40. The period ended at 2-1, with Chamberlain having faced 16 shots to Hollyhead's 11.

Within 2 minutes of the start of the third, Ales Parez had restored MK's 2 goal advantage with a slap shot from the blue line that flew into the top of the net. With Raiders now chasing the game and getting more frustrated, gaps were being left at the back, and at 57.26 man of the match Towalski found himself in acres of space in front of the net from Parez' clever pass, and he doubled his tally to make the score 4-1. After a tripping penalty was called against Cox of Romford at 58.49, Wales and Wallis went toe to toe centre ice with both landing some good shots, but both getting 2+2+10 for their troubles. Chamberlain faced a further 15 shots in the 3rd giving a total of 44 shots faced, whereas Hollyhead was much the quieter of the two netminders, facing just 5 shots in the final period to give a total of 21. Man of the match for Romford was McKenzie, while Towalski picked up the award for MKL for his brace and all round contribution.
