Bracknell 0 v 3 MKL Win

After a disappointing home result in the local derby against Peterborough, Lightning travelled to Berkshire looking to get something from the weekend. Their task was perhaps easier that in recent visits in that Bracknell has struggled to find the net at home all through October and came into the game on the back of a controversial 1-0 reversal against Guildford the previous evening.

With both teams looking for their first points of the weekend, the first period started as a cagey affair, with neither team looking to make any errors. The passing between the Lightning looked crisper than it had done the night before, but the end product wouldn't come with Rockman in nets for the Bees making some fine saves. A 2+10 penalty to Bees Joe Baird for a check from behind gave MK a powerplay, but they were unable to open the scoring. Similarly, towards the end of the period Bees had the chance on the PP with first Ales Parez going in, soon followed by coach Nick Poole to give the Bees over a minute of 5 on 3, but the defence held well, reducing Bees to long range efforts from the blue line which Barry Hollyhead kept out comfortably, keeping the game scoreless at the first break.

The second period saw Lightning start with more purpose and confidence and were soon on the offensive, working Rockman in the goal. The breakthrough came on 24.58 from the effervescent 3rd line. Matt Towalski cut from behind the net and tried to force the puck past Rockman at his right hand post, but from his save the puck went to the other side of the net where Michael Wales was on hand for the easiest of tap in's. MK's second goal came on 34.30, with again Lightning capitalising on a rebound from the Bracknell netminder. Greg Randall forced the save from Rockman but his inability to hold onto the puck left the simplest of tap in's for James Archer to extend the lead. With Bracknell falling behind in the game, they started to get frustrated, and towards the end of the period that frustration boiled over when Joe Greener went for Lukas Zatopek after Hollyhead had frozen the puck. With Zatopek covering up in the fight, Greener was given a double minor penalty and giving MK 4 minutes of powerplay. At 38.47 Andre Smulter burst through to latch onto a loose puck and from just in front of the net he made no problem of the finish and gave Lightning a 3-0 lead going into the 3rd period.

With MK 3 goals to the good, the 3rd period was one of simply preserving the lead from a Bees side that lacked the calmness in front of goal at times. With Barry only facing 6 shots in the final period, Lightning were comfortable winners on the night. The only moments of action in the final period saw Archer clean through from the blue line, but his shot was well saved by Rockman. At the other end Chris McEwen caused his own defence problems when his attempted clearance hit a team mates skates and rebounded towards the net, only for Hollyhead to save the D man's blushes. A solid display from Hollyhead shutting out Bees in their own rink gave him a shout of the MOM award, but this instead went to Smulter for his all round work all evening and his finely taken goal.
