Lightning played their get out of jail card with a win they barely deserved against Peterborough Phantoms.
After falling two goals behind to their closest rivals Lightning had it all to do in the final half of the game.
And although they got a goal back by the second break it was not until the final 10 minutes that they stepped up the gas sufficiently to put Phantoms on the back foot.
The visitors took the lead on 11mins 42secs when Chris Allen’s shot was parried by netminder Barry Holyhead to Jeff Glowa who shot in from the left.
Things looked bleak for Lightning when Phantoms punished a mistake by Lewis Christie with Glowa setting up Luke Ferrara to score after 23mins 59secs.
Blaz Emersic gave the home side hope when his shot from distance beat goalie Damien King after 37mins 14secs.
With 1min 10secs remaining on the game Hollyhead was withdrawn for the extra skater in a bid to get the equaliser. And for once the ploy worked – Lightning having five forwards on the ice when Juraj Gracik unleashed a super shot to the far side of King with 47 seconds remaining.
That sent the game into overtime which failed to produce any further goals and so penalties were necessary. Both Emersic and Adam Carr converted theirs with Maris Ziedins and Glowa failed – thus giving Lightning a 3-2 victory.
