Lightning were made to pay dearly for a poor start which saw them go two goals behind in the first quarter of an hour at Sheffield Steeldogs.
Although Nick Poole’s men narrowed the gap to 3-2 at the second break they had no answer to an unassisted Janis Ozolins goal scored with 10mins 45secs to go.
Lightning suffered an early blow when Lloyd Gibson set up Andrew Hirst for the opener after 6mins 36secs. And goalie Barry Hollyhead was picking the puck out of the net again on 14mins 17secs when Edgars Bebris was the provider for Ozolins to bag the first of his goals.
Trailing 2-0 at the first break it was not until Lightning had a five on three powerplay with Hirst and Pavel Gomeniuk in the sin bin that Leigh Jamieson found cut the deficit with a Blaz Emersic assisted goal at 35mins 28secs. But then Sheffield got a third goal thanks to Gomeniuk at 39mins 39secs while Lukas Zatopek was serving time for tripping. However a Juraj Gracik strike – assisted by Zatopek – five seconds from the buzzer gave the city team hope. But it was not to be with Ozolins’ second goal making it 4-2 – Lightning’s cause not helped by the fact that they spent most of the final minutes of the game short handed.
