Three unanswered goals in the third period wrecked Lightning’s chances of pulling off a victory against at an in form Manchester Phoenix. Phoenix were quickest off the mark when former Lightning man James Archer set up Tom Duggan for the first Phoenix goal on 1min 36secs. There was a rapid response from the visitors when captain Adam Carr netted past goalie Stephen Fone unassisted after 2mins 51secs. Twice Manchester had unsuccessful powerplay chances with Adam Brittle and Lukas Zatopek were penalised for hooking and roughing respectively. But they did better when they were short-handed with Josh Ward in the sin bin – Duggan getting his second to give Phoenix the lead at 16mins 43secs – the score remaining 2-1 at the break. Lightning equalised in the powerplay – Ladislav Harabin called for tripping – with Leigh Jamieson the supplier for Juraj Gracik after 25mins 4secs. It seemed to be déjà vu from the previous evening though as it was not long before Manchester went in front again, Juraj Faith registering after 29mins 25secs ahead of Michael Wales being the provider for Gant McPherson to make it 3-3 on 30mins 44secs. That was the final Lightning goal though as Phoenix took the lead again 4mins 35secs into the last period through Ben Wood and then added further goals by Jaroslav Spelda at 47mins 55secs and Harabin on 51mins 29secs to make it 6-3.
