Lightning struck first after only 1min 14secs at Basingstoke Bison through Leigh Jamieson. But from then on it was all downhill as they were unable to add to their score until after the half way mark. By that stage a Bison side reduced to two lines due to several injuries, with import Viktor Kubenko among the absentees, had fought back to take a 3-1 lead. When Grant McPherson was given a four minute penalty for roughing and tripping Kurt Reynolds made the visitors pay with a powerplay goal on 9mins 32secs. There was no further score in the first session despite the teams having a powerplay apiece. It did not take long though in the second period for Bison to edge in front when Chris Wiggins tipped in a Marcel Petran blue line shot after 26mins 26secs. Reynolds fired home from the blue line after 30mins 20secs to extend Bison’s advantage. Michael Wales – from Grant McPherson and Adam Brittle – gave Lightning a glimmer of hope with a second goal after 32mins 48secs. But it was to prove to be the travellers’ last goal of the evening. Lightning’s chances were not helped by two late penalties on Jamieson and Adam Carr and even when goalie Alex Mettam was withdrawn for the extra skater in the final minute it was not enough to produce an equaliser.
