Lightning ended up 5-3 losers at bogey team Slough Jets – after being seconds away from taking their first point off the Berkshire team this season.

The main difference between the two sides was the deadly duo of Adam Calder and Doug Sheppard.

Former Coventry Blaze sniper Calder bagged a hat-trick including the game winning goal 43 seconds from the buzzer while ex-Sheffield Steeler Sheppard scored the final goal on an empty net at 59mins 48secs and got assists on three of the other Jets goals.
Slough got off to a fine start with Joe Greener beating goalie Barry Hollyhead after 1min 54secs but Lightning hit back when Monir Kalgoum set up Nick Poole for the equaliser at 7mins 14secs.

But Jets edged back in front with Calder on the mark at 11mins 33secs for a 2-1 lead at the end of the first period.

Calder stretched the lead with a further strike at 25mins 40secs.

There was a scare for Lightning midway through the game when young defenceman Ross Green took a bad hit into the boards and appeared to be seriously hurt.

As the second period minutes ticked down Lukas Zatopek gave Lightning hope with a powerplay goal at 36mins 5secs to make it 3-2 at the break.

When Kalgoum levelled at 49mins 42secs it looked as though Lightning were in with a chance of getting something from the game.
But they hadn’t reckoned with Calder who registered unassisted for his hat-trick at 59mins 17secs.

Lightning withdrew Hollyhead for the extra skater, allowing Sheppard to score on an empty net with 12 seconds to go.
