Lightning despatched Sheffield Steeldogs for the second time in eight days with a 5-2 victory at iceSheffield – despite going behind to a powerplay goal after 56 seconds.
Although Sheffield were able to make the most of the holding penalty on Michael Farn it was the only time in the game that they led – not that the lead lasted long with Nick Poole setting up Adam Carr for the equaliser just 20 seconds later. Farn was in trouble with referee Steve Brown just a minute later – this time for hooking, but on this occasion Steeldogs could find no way through.
Instead Lightning were next to score when Andre Smulter was the provider for Gary Clarke who netted on the powerplay. Things got even worse for Steeldogs just 24 seconds later when the third line got in on the act with Michael Wales supplying Matt Towalski to make it 3-1 – the score at the first break.
There was a glimmer of hope for Steeldogs when Smulter was called for slashing in the 25th minute with former Lightning man Adam Radmall the provider for Lloyd Gibson to score the host’s second.
But Lightning went back in two goals front after 31mins 40secs when Poole and Smulter combined – the Finn getting the goal. There were no further goals until the final minute of the third period, by which time Sheffield had pulled their netminder for the extra skater, giving Leigh Jamieson the chance to score on an empty net at 59mins 8secs to round off a 5-2 win.
