Peterborough v MKL 5/12/10 |
Lightning were ‘not good enough’ admitted player coach Nick Poole after they fell to a 2-1 defeat at Peterborough Phantoms. Poole made his candid assessment in a post match interview in which he added: “We just didn’t work hard enough. We let ourselves down. Every game in this league is tough and we can’t afford to take nights off.”
Despite the coach’s comments Peterborough only managed a 2-1 victory against their old rivals – and that was largely due to the sparkling performance of netminder Alex Mettam who turned away shot after shot.
Lightning started the game without Gary Clarke who after taking part in the warm-up had to retire with the leg injury picked up the previous evening. Also again missing was Grant McPherson with a hip injury.
Former Hull Stingray Jeff Glowa opened the scoring with less than two minutes of the first period remaining when he met his own rebounding effort to put it home at second attempt.
Six minutes after the restart the home side doubled their lead when Chris Allen, making his debut after being signed as a temporary replacement for the injured Darius Lelenas, registered from Glowa’s pass.
Leigh Jamieson gave Lightning some hope of getting something from the game when he crashed in a powerful blueliner while his side were on the powerplay 34 seconds into the third session.
Minutes later Jamieson received a five minutes plus game penalty for cross checking Thomas Jeffery – both players also receiving two plus two roughing.
From then on Phantoms shut Lightning down to take the points.
