Only once before, in season 2007-2008, have Lightning lost five league games on the bounce.
At Bretton they fell a goal behind on 12mins 27secs when James Spurr fired into the top corner.
The visitors had a number of chances to draw level before the end of the period with a fierce Lukas Zatopek shot going wide while Gary Clarke and Blaz Emersic both saw their efforts saved by goalie Stephen Wall.
Emersic again came close in the second period but his effort went wide before Zatopek had a shot pushed away.
Lightning were reduced to three skaters when Monir Kalgoum and Leigh Jamieson were both in the sin bin on boarding and tripping calls. And that gave the home team the chance to stretch the lead with James Hutchinson setting up Jeff Glowa to score on 32mins 23secs.
A late powerplay enabled Lightning to get back into the game when Andre Smulter shot high into the goal 12 seconds from the second break.
The visitors piled on the pressure as the third period got under way with Kalgoum and Jamieson both having good chances.
But it was Phantoms who sealed the points with a third goal on 58mins 37secs – a second of the game for Glowa, set up by Darius Lelenas.
Lightning withdrew goalie Barry Hollyhead as the clock ticked down but it was to no avail.
