A controversial goal 42 seconds from the buzzer ended Lightning’s hopes of pulling off a comeback victory against a hard-working Slough Jets at the Thunderdome.

Lightning had battled their way back into the game after a slow first period start in which they were outshot 18-8 and had conceded a seventh minute goal with Jan Krajicek scoring from a behind the net pass from Michael Bowman, giving goalie Alex Mettam, playing despite injury, no chance.

Monir Kalgoum gave Lightning a great start to the second period when he scored from close range on 23mins 27secs.
But parity did not last long – Mettam appeared to be unsighted when Doug Sheppard put Jets back in front on 24mins 31secs.
However Lightning hit back again on 28mins 6secs and again it was Kalgoum, this time on the powerplay, who equalised.
Slough retook the lead after 41mins 16secs through Blaz Emersic while Gary Clarke was in the sin bin for hooking.
Clarke got back Lightning on terms at 56mins 21secs before an icing infringement reduced Lightning to four skaters. They then lost another player when Nick Poole was strangely penalised for slashing despite being laid flat out on the ice for a prolonged period, having looked to be the victim rather than the guilty party.

Just as the game looked as though it was heading for overtime Emersic shot, Mettam blocked the puck and referee Joy Tottman blew her whistle before it crossed the line at 59 mins 18secs. However the goal judge’s light went on and Tottman awarded a goal, much to the amazement of many fans. It was a cruel end to Lightning’s fight back.
