Sheffield Steeldogs proved no match for a resurgent Lightning who completed their fifth win over the Yorkshire outfit this season with a comfortable 5-1 victory at the Thunderdome.
Lightning established a two goal lead before the 10 minute mark but it was not until they grabbed three goals in almost as many minutes in the second period that the game was effectively over.
At that stage Steeldogs’ player coach Andre Payette called a timeout and it did at least stem the flow of goals against them. But, for the most part, Payette was left chasing shadows as Lightning’s younger forwards outpaced him.
When Payette, a player with a hard man reputation, did manage to make contact with an opposition player he found they preferred to play hockey than fight.
Quick witted Adam Brittle put Lightning ahead on 6mins 50secs when he followed up a rebounding Monir Kalgoum shot.
The home side were a man short after Grant McPherson was called for tripping but that did not stop Blaz Emersic and Adam Carr breaking away with the Brit netting short handed on 9mins 26secs.
Janie Ozolins shook off his marker to go one on one and round goalie Alex Mettam to reduce the deficit at 16mins 30secs. Early in the second session Sheffield were gifted a golden chance to get back in the game with Lightning reduced to three skaters – but the home side stood firm and refused to concede.
Once back at full strength Michael Wales passed across the face of goal for Carr to score at 26mins 42secs.
Steeldogs goalie Ben Bowns did not seem to know where the shot was coming from when Matt Towalski made it 4-1 at 28mins 50secs and less than a minute later, on 29mins 44secs, Monir Kalgoum was provider for Andre Smulter to seal the game.
There was no way back for Steeldogs from that, despite the timeout, and in the third period Lightning could afford to take their foot off the gas a little.
