It was one of those nights – to borrow the title of an old Eagles song – when nothing went right for Lightning as they went down 2-1 to rivals Peterborough Phantoms.
In fact things went wrong as early at the 25 second mark when Jeff Glowa pounced on the puck right in front of goal to give the visitors the lead.
From then on Lightning were facing an uphill battle against an in form goalie Stephen Wall and a well drilled defensive unit which made getting decent shots on goal a difficult task.
Having said that Lightning edged the first period in terms of the better chances and could count themselves unlucky when Adam Brittle’s first time effort from Monir Kalgoum’s pass from the right on just under eight minutes somehow hit the post after beating Wall.
Lightning’s downfall in the first session was the three penalties they conceded although they did at least keep Phantoms at bay. In the second period Lightning incredibly outshot Peterborough to the tune of 21-2 but still had nothing to show for their efforts. Phantoms stepped up their offensive efforts a little in the final period and when Luke Ferrara put Glowa away on a breakaway the Canadian grabbed the visitors second goal at 46mins 6secs, beating goalie Alex Mettam, one on one.
The hosts were just withdrawing Mettam when Leigh Jamieson provided the pass for Blaz Emersic to finally defeat Wall on 58mins 38secs.
Lightning immediately called a timeout and shortly after took Mettam off again.
With 42 seconds to go they believed they had the equaliser when Jamieson crashed through and shot – only for referee, after consultation, to rule that the puck had not crossed the line and with it Lightning’s hopes were dashed.
Yes it was one of those nights…..
