Basingstoke Bison defeated Lightning for only the second time this season with a 6-3 victory at the Thunderdome. In one of Lightning’s poorest displays of the season Bison got a confidence boosting win ahead of the two sides’ scheduled meeting in the quarter finals of the championship play-offs. Bison were three goals to the good before Lightning got off the mark – the visitors’ first goal coming just 1min 55secs into the contest when Viktor Kubenko had a bit of luck with a shot that went in off the post while Michael Wales was serving a tripping penalty. There was a delay to the end of the first period due to damage to the home penalty bench door. But once repaired, the game got under way again and Bison added to their score with Tony Redmond firing in at 17mins 28secs. Lightning’s defence went AWOL not once but twice in the space of just over three minutes when no one tracked down Ciaran Long – although goalie Barry Hollyhead could have done better with his first goal on the powerplay at 28mins 25secs. Monir Kalgoum almost ended up in the net himself as he got Lightning’s first goal on 30mins 48secs but Bison were soon leading by three goals again as Long skated through unopposed to register on 31mins 47szecs. Nick Poole boosted home fans’ hopes of a third period turnaround as he was given plenty of time to pick his spot over a stranded goalie, Dean Skinns, on 42mins exactly. However Ben Davies made it 5-2 on44mins 10secds with a shot which hit the metalwork and rebounded over the line off Hollyhead’s back. The same player took the tally to 6-2 with a blast to the left of Hollyhead at 49mins 10secs. With 9mins 26secs remaining Leigh Jamieson set up Gary Clarke to crash in the hosts’ third goal. Immediately after Hollyhead was replaced by Alex Mettam who was able to deal with all four of the shots on goal Bison produced as they maintained their lead.
