Hopes of a clean sweep of league victories against Guildford Flames at the Spectrum Centre were dashed when Lightning fell two goals behind in the opening 11 minutes and ended 7-3 losers.

Matt Towe set up Martin Masa to pen Flames’ account 5mins 26secs into the game and when Michael Farn picked up a two minute penalty for hooking in the ninth minute the home side were able to capitalise on the powerplay. Milos Melicherik was the provider for Nathan Rempel to fire past goalie Barry Hollyhead on 10mins 33secs.

Masa was again the scorer as Flames stretched the lead to 3-0 on 24mins 16secs before Lightning finally got on the scoreboard with an Adam Brittle assisted goal from Monir Kalgoum timed at 26mins 52secs.

However it did not take the Surrey long to net again – just 20 seconds later through a Melicherik assisted Rempel marker.

Lightning were given a powerplay when Neil Liddiard was sent to the sin bin for hooking and Michael Wales, aided by Lukas Zatopek, made the most of it, beating goalie Mark Lee at 30mins 28secs.

Once more Flames struck back quickly through Andrew Hemmings at 31mins 41secs before a further Lightning powerplay strike from Blaz Emersic on 34mins 30secs made it 5-3 at the second break.

In the third period Flames pulled away with Rempel bagging his second goal at 52mins 30secs and David Savage registering on the powerplay – Grant McPherson sitting out a holding penalty – on 57mins 16secs.
