Lightning eventually came out on top in an 11 goal thriller at Bracknell Bees – but it took an overtime goal from Leigh Jamieson to secure two vital points against the struggling Berkshire side.
Nick Poole’s men took a while to get going and it was Scott Spearing who put Bees in front on 15mins 25secs when he fired past goalie Alex Mettam.
Lukas Zatopek, assisted by Poole, got Lightning back on terms with a goal 3mins 44secs into the second period – a delayed penalty effort.
But back came Bees to take full advantage of a tripping call on Blaz Emersic at 25mins 3secs. The home side took just 42 seconds of the powerplay advantage to net through Peter Jasik.
Michal Pinc increased the lead in the 31st minute – making it 3-1 before Lightning were rewarded for their efforts with an Jamieson goal at 32mins 10secs – unassisted – and an Adam Brittle assisted shorthanded strike by Andre Smulter 1min 19secs later.
Parity didn’t last long though with former Lightning man Greg Randall setting up James Galazzi for a powerplay goal at 33mins 56secs.
If fans thought that was the end of the scoring for the second period they were wrong – Emersic drawing Lightning level after 36mins 28secs.
Goals were not so frequent in the final period and the visiting fans must have been hoping Smulter’s second of the evening at 48mins 39secs would be enough to wrap up the points.
Bees had other ideas and Galazzi set up Alex Barker for his side’s fifth goal with 2mins 42secs of regulation time remaining.
With no further goals before the buzzer it was on to overtime with Bees hitting the post and wasting a two on one chance before Jamieson finished off with a goal 44 seconds from the end of the extra five minutes.
