Smothering Flames is Lightning's aim
Safety first is the plan for MK Lightning this weekend, and smothering Guildford Flames before they pose any real danger will be the aim of the home team at Planet Ice on Saturday (29 January, 7pm).

To achieve that would be a reminder of Lightning’s scintillating form on Guildford’s home ice three weeks ago, when Nick Poole’s men were two goals to the good within a mere three minutes of play starting, eventually leaving the Spectrum with a 5-0 shut-out.  MK played looked by far the more confident side that evening, refusing to allow Guildford the time or space to gain a foot-hold in the game, and that will be the objective again this Saturday.

The recent home defeat of league leaders Manchester Phoenix and a third consecutive weekend with maximum points will ensure Lightning face off against Guildford full of confidence.  Nick Poole's side is unbeaten since 2nd January and the meanest defence in the EPL has conceded only 73 goals all season, compared with Guildford's 108.  Guildford, meanwhile, lost both of last weekend's matches away at Basingstoke then at home to Slough.  At 6ft 3ins and 215lbs Flames’ new D-man, Canadian Jeremy van Hoof, will be doing his best to help keep Milton Keynes at bay and keep his new team in with a shout for the league title.

With recent wins pushing Lightning to within touching distance of both Slough and Basingstoke in the league table and five games in hand overall, the momentum is with MK - who intend to fight all the way to stay in contention for the two remaining pieces of silverware.
