MKL Hunt for Backup Netminder
Thursday, 22 January 2009

The Milton Keynes Lightning are looking for a second netminder to join the side as they hunt down silverware over the remaining three months of the season.  We had hoped to be able to use our own club netminders in this position, but due to an Under 18 leaving the sport and our ED1 side not wanting to release their netminder as they hunt  a higher placement in the division we have had to play several games without a backup.  Also, we would like to be able to give our starting netminder Barry Hollyhead a well deserved rest  as we head into the business side of the season.  Any interested netminders please email This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it   with CV's or any questions you may have.

MK Lightning Award Nick Poole A Testimonial
Wednesday, 14 January 2009

ImageThe Management of the Milton Keynes Lightning are pleased to announce that Nick Poole has accepted an offer for a testimonial at the end of this season. This is to celebrate his ten years of hockey in Milton Keynes and although a firm date has not yet been agreed we are hoping to hold the event immediately after this season finishes.

Nicks association with Milton Keynes started in the 1998/99 season when he was an ISL all-star with the London Knights, a team hosted here in Milton Keynes. Nicks long term affiliation with the Milton Keynes Junior Ice Hockey Club began by helping out on a weekly basis in this season.

The following season Nick decided to stay in Milton Keynes and take up the role of full time Head Coach of the Milton Keynes juniors. He was also to play for the MK Kings in the British National League. That season Nick was voted for a second time, an All-Star player by the British Hockey Writers association.

The rink closure in Milton Keynes meant he had to virtually start from scratch with the junior programme but with the foresight of the then Junior Club members who brought Nick into the Milton Keynes structure, he has helped to guide a number of age groups from the "B" Leagues to the "A" Leagues. His coaching career here has also helped to develop a number of juniors into the Senior game and at various levels, and is also  rightly proud of the group of youngsters coming through the club at the moment.

This season is Nick's tenth year as Head Coach of the MK Junior Ice Hockey Club and his ninth as either a player or player coach in Milton Keynes senior teams.  2001/02 season. was the only year in the 10 Nick  was not seen in a Milton Keynes shirt, electing to play for free to help the Peterborough Pirates make it through the season.

In 2002/03 season Nick became the player coach of the Milton Keynes Lightning in their inaugural season.  He has been influential in the team's success both on and off the ice.  The Lightning won an unprecedented 4 Playoff trophies in 4 years to go with 2 League trophies in the same time period.  The Lightning have always played a fast-paced and entertaining brand of hockey as Nick is a firm believer in this philosophy.  Harry Howton, who was instrumental in setting up the MK Lightning with Nick and Vito said, "It is with great pleasure that we will host a testimonial game for Nick at the end of this season. It is thoroughly deserved and we know it will be a great evening with some great names from both past and present from not only Milton Keynes but up and down the country. We want to put on a great event for someone who has been a fantastic ambassador for the game and give him a night to remember "

General Manager, Vito Rausa added " Nick has been a fantastic servant to both the game and to Ice Hockey in Milton Keynes, he has always tried to play the game the right way and that has always been reflected in the style of play we've come to enjoy in Milton Keynes. His commitment to junior hockey in Milton Keynes has been second to none ".

Stay tuned for more details and announcements over the coming weeks.

“A Christmas present from the Supporters Club to the MK Lightning”
Tuesday, 23 December 2008

ImageThe Mk Lightning are delighted to announce, that Thanks to the fantastic fundraising of the Supporters Club we have been able to sign Swedish forward Joakim Wiklander who currently plays in the Swedish Division one for Botyrka Hockey.

The 24 year old Swede, who stands at 6’2’, has scored 47 points from his 25 games for Botyrka this season and is currently the 2nd highest point scorer in the team and 4th  highest in the Eastern conference. Last year he played in the Austrian 2nd Division where he amassed a credible 54 points from 34 games.

Of the signing General Manager, Vito Rausa said, “We spoke to Joakim at the beginning of the season and were very keen on him joining us, but he had commitments in Sweden that meant he was unable to join us straight away. Since then we have kept in contact and are now delighted to have him join us in what could turn out to be a 2 year contract.”

The Winger, who is also comfortable playing centre will be a welcome addition to a Lightning squad that has had its fair share of injuries not least of which to Al Parez who missed the last two weekend games with a reoccurring shoulder injury.

“Vito added, “as a lot of people know, Al has been playing whilst carrying a shoulder injury that he has not really allowed to heel properly and all that happens is that he keeps aggravating the injury which causes him a further setback. We spoke to Al of our concerns and he agreed that he needed to get some specialist advice which he is hoping to do over Christmas in the Czech Republic.  Harry and I both felt we needed to act sooner rather than later to strengthen the team and spoke to Nick on the matter who told us he had just the person he wanted to add to the squad.”

“With the transfer deadline drawing nearer, we felt that to wait much longer could have meant playing a big chunk of the Season with only 3 non British trained players, and whilst we sincerely hope Al will be back before the end of the season, at this moment, we cannot be completely sure” said Vito.

Joakim is due to fly into the UK in early January and we are expecting to play his first competitive games on the10th of January.
