The Met Office might not mention it but there’ll be plenty of Thunder and Lightning in Milton Keynes next weekend - at the MK Festival of Ice Hockey at Planet Ice Arena (Sat 19 and Sun 20 March).
Milton Keynes Lightning Ice Hockey Club, in conjunction with Milton Keynes Thunder and Planet Ice today confirmed the details for a unique event which gives ice hockey fans the chance see reigning English Premier League champions MK Lightning play two home matches in one weekend, as well as seeing Thunder take on English National League rivals, Romford Raiders. Supporters attending more than one game will save on normal ticket prices with a choice of special tickets to let them mix and match which games they attend over the weekend, and there is also a bonus for MK Lightning season ticket holders. Hockey fans who buy a combined ticket for MK Thunder vs Romford Raiders followed by MK Lightning vs Manchester Phoenix on Saturday 19 March will save on normal ticket prices, and anyone buying a special ticket to see both games contested by Nick Poole’s men that weekend can make savings as well. Fans buying a Festival of Hockey weekend ticket to see both of Lightning’s games that weekend as well as MK Thunder’s Saturday game will make savings of just over 18% on a family ticket compared with normal ticket prices, which equates to £13. MK Lightning season ticket-holders - who have obviously pre-paid for the season - haven’t been forgotten, and will be able to attend the MK Thunder fixture on Saturday completely free of charge, giving a saving of £5 per adult ticket and £2.50 per child’s ticket. MK Thunder have two games in hand overall and will be gunning for points from Saturday’s match against Romford, to help them leapfrog ENL rivals Cardiff, Oxford and Streatham and move up the league table. Lightning’s fixture against Manchester on Saturday will be the final league visit to MK this season for Tony Hand’s title pretenders; last time the two sides met at Planet Ice in January, Nick Poole’s men were convincing 6-3 winners in front of a large and fiercely supportive home crowd. Steve Moria’s Basingstoke team come to Milton Keynes on Sunday having lost their last two games against Lightning in nail-biting contests which were both decided by penalties. The opportunity to combine matches from the two leagues into a weekend-long celebration of the game was one not to be missed, said Lightning’s general manager, Vito Rausa. “We know there are a lot of MK Lightning supporters who have never been to an MK Thunder game, and vice versa”, he said. “This coming weekend gives supporters of both teams the chance to see back-to-back games in different leagues, and save money on their tickets at the same time. It would be fantastic if we could pack out the rink for both games on Saturday and really stoke up the atmosphere, then carry over that atmosphere into Sunday’s match – and hopefully welcome some Thunder supporters to that game too.” Acknowledging Lightning’s season ticket-holders, he said “The commitment that our season ticket holders show in paying up front to watch the team is a massive boost to us, in planning the club’s finances for the rest of the season. So it’s great to be able to give something back by giving those supporters free entry to the MK Thunder game on Saturday. “Everyone involved has worked hard to reach agreement on arrangements for the weekend, so we can stage three massive games in two days, and offer special tickets to make it more affordable for supporters to see a game they might not otherwise have gone to. “I’d like to thank the management of MK Thunder and Planet Ice for working with us at MK Lightning to be able to stage this fantastic event over two days, and hopefully both teams will see the benefits from a crossover of support. If you’ve never been to an ice hockey game before, this is a fantastic opportunity to watch matches at both levels, save money on your tickets and see exactly why ice hockey fans in Milton Keynes are some of the most passionate in the country – if you’re new to the game, I guarantee you’ll be hooked!” Full ticket price details can be found on our website www.mk-lightning.com The schedule for the weekend is as follows: Saturday 19 March: MK Thunder v Romford Raiders – face off at 4.30pm MK Lightning v Manchester Phoenix – face off at 7.30pm.
